"I have been asked why I would choose a career in immigration law. I believe this is a question that many immigration attorneys are asked. I came to the United States from Puerto Rico as a young child. I did not understand English and everything from the language to the culture was a complex web I had to navigate at a young age. I was my mother's translator for everything. I believe my experiences shaped my understanding of what it means to be a stranger in a new land and shaped my desire to work as an advocate for immigrants. For over 25 years I have worked with the immigrant community, first as a paralegal and later as an attorney. I cannot imagine myself doing anything else. I believe it is my calling."

Attorney Maria Serra graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Legal Studies. She then went on to receive her Juris Doctor from St. Thomas University, College of Law.

Attorney Maria Serra is a Member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and is the author of a weekly journal "Last Week This Monday" that provides updates on immigration matters. She also is a regular personality on La Familia 99.5 FM radio station where she discusses immigration issues.
